Updating Eclipse from Juno to Kepler

Updating Eclipse from Juno to Kepler in 5 simple steps. My PDT(PHP), Ruby, EGit, and SVN plugins all work after the update.

1. Click Help > Install New Software.

2. Click the add button and add this location: http://download.eclipse.org/releases/kepler/

3. After a short wait, the location has been added, click Cancel.

4. Click Help > Check for Updates.

5. I updated all plugins so I clicked OK whenever it asked and I accepted license agreements.

This will run for a while as it downloads and installs, once it is done it will ask to restart Eclipse. After Eclipse restarts you should be on Kepler.

Switching to Eclipse Juno with Ruby and PDT

I have decided to take the plunge and switch my eclipse version from Indigo to Juno with the PDT and Ruby plugins. I also have to migrate the Indigo workspaces to Juno workspaces. I’ll start with installing a “base” eclipse and adding the Ruby and PDT plugins. I’ll start with Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers and add plugins for PHP (PDT) and Ruby (Ruby DLTK) on top of it.

After I downloaded and installed my “base” eclipse, I need to install the PHP and Ruby plugins. From the Eclipse menubar goto Help > Install New Software. In the Work With field select Juno releases http://download.eclipse.org/releases/juno

To install PDT, select Program Languages > PHP Development Tools (PDT) SDK

Click Next, Ok, accept license agreement and the installation should begin.

To install Ruby, select Program Languages > Dynamic Languages Toolkit – Ruby Development Tools

Click Next, Ok, accept license agreement and the installation should begin.

Rsync on save in Eclipse on OSX

When I’m developing I like to have my eclipse set up to rsync my code on every save. Since OSX has the rsync command available this is not a hard thing to do. I choose to implement an ant builder and have eclipse run that builder when every I save.

This eclipse builder expects two things:

  • You have configured access to the remote server via passwordless SSH
  • The key for the passwordless SSH connection is available on the computer that eclipse is installed on

Ok, I’ll break down what I did in the ant script and then explain how to configure eclipse to execute this script on every save.

Start the ant script with the XML declaration. Then we add the project element, make sure that the basedir attribute is set to the current directory “.” , and make sure the default attribute is set to rsync. The description element is not required.

Next I start declaring ant properties that will be used by the rsync ant target. This property is the location of the directory that will be the source for the rsync.

This property configuration for the destination host name.

This property is the configuration for the destination directory.

This property is the location of the SSH key that can be used to login to the destination server.

This property is the user that will be used on for the SSH connection to the remote server.

This is the heart of the ant builder, it is the target that actually perform the rsync. It does so by calling thru to the OS shell and performing an rsync.

It is configured to not rsync any hidden files or directories, and I have a short list of additional files I do not want rsync’d. You can edit this to exclude additional files.

Ok, now that the ant builder file is complete we can now configure eclipse to use this whenever a file is saved.

Copy the rsync.xml file to the root of an eclipse project

Next highlight the project and select properties. Then select builders and click the new button.

Select Ant Builder

Enter the name of the builder, I choose example_rsync, you will need to do this for each project so pre-pending the project name to “_rsync” makes sure I don’t have any name collisions. Under the Buildfile setting, click the Browse Workspace button.

Select the location of the rsync.xml build file for this project, and click the OK button.

Now the important part we need to associate the the rsync with the save. Click the Targets tab, we want to configure the Auto Build event to run the default target on the ant script. Click the Set Targets button next to the Auto Build setting and make sure it is set to the rsync target which is the default. Click the OK button.

Click OK, to close the builder screen.

Turn on the auto build for the project. From the Eclipse menubar click Projects > Build Automatically

Once project auto build is on, whenever a file is saved in the project any associated builders will be ran.

That’s it when you save a file in the project it will now rsync the changes to your remote server. You need to perform these steps for each eclipse project you want to have rsync on save.

Keep eclipse “clean” from the OSX command line

If you are on OSX and using eclipse it’s good from time to time to clean cached data. You have to start eclipe from the command line to perform the clean. I am forgetting this command all the time, so I thought I’d put it some place where I can easily find it.

Change directory, “cd”, to the directory where eclipse is installed and enter the following line in a terminal window.

./eclipse -clean -vmargs -XstartOnFirstThread

It takes a little longer to start up than usual, but now you have a squeaky clean eclipse.

Getting Eclipse and SVN to play nice on OSX 10.7+

If you get the dreaded…

“Incompatible JavaHL library loaded. 1.7.x or later required.”

error message when trying to use the subclipse plugin, you need to install the WANDisco certified subversion for 10.7.

Then restart eclipse.

Well, it worked for me…

Setting up Eclipse for Ruby development

Setting up Eclipse for Ruby development is not that difficult, I did not take screen shots when I set up my eclipse for Ruby development, but I do have a screen shot of what the installed plugins look like. I hope this is enough to help anyone who might be having issue getting the plugin installed. The install process is pretty simple Eclipse does all of the hard work when you use the update URL for the plugin.

I did have a few problems trying to install this plugin, I was getting conflict message with the PHP development plugin (PDT). I wish I would have documented the steps, but I do have the update site URL I used for the installation.

Yes, I use the Eclipse IDE as my code editor/IDE of choice. It seems as if a lot of people feel that Eclipse is too much IDE for quick and nimble development, but I seem to be able to develop without having it get in the way. I have been using Eclipse for awhile, at least 5 years, and maybe I just know how to develop “the Eclipse way”.

I have used Coda, Komodo, and NetBeans in the past but none seemed “quite right”. I know I’m biased, but I just never found a better IDE. That’s not to say I like everything about it, but I have more likes than dislikes. Eclipse has a huge library of plugins, with a active community to ask questions.

Let me know what your decision criteria was for choosing your current IDE/Editor?
